Jazz returns to the Athenaeum for the La Jolla music and humanities library’s annual collection of winter concert events, starting Jan. 21.

The collection, that includes each Athenaeum favorites and debuts by acclaimed artists, opens with the Linda Might Han Oh Quintet. Oh’s previous Athenaeum appearances have been along with her personal quartet (2017), her husband Fabian Almazan’s trio (2019) and the Dave Douglas-Joe Lovano Soundprints band (2014). The bassist obtained the 2023 Herb Alpert Award within the Arts.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The opposite reveals (most are on Sundays, besides the concluding live performance of the collection) all characteristic native debuts:

  • Jan. 28 – the Gilad Hekselman Trio, led by the New York-based jazz guitarist. In 2017, Hekselman positioned first within the Rising Star guitarist class in DownBeat journal.
  • Feb. 4 – the James Francies Trio. Purest Kind, the pianist-keyboardist’s second Blue Observe launch, follows Flight from 2018.
  • Feb. 28 – the Benjamin Lackner Quartet. The Berlin-based pianist, as soon as a scholar in California, has carried out at quite a few jazz festivals together with North Sea, Montreux and Monterey.
