A piece of Interstate 5 in North County was renamed Monday after native firefighting legend William “Invoice” Clayton.

Officers gathered on what would have been Clayton’s 83rd birthday for a dedication and signal unveiling ceremony in honor of one of the embellished firefighters in Cal Fireplace historical past.

The “CAL FIRE Chief William R Clayton Memorial Freeway” stretches from La Costa Avenue in Encinitas to Cannon Highway in Carlsbad.

Clayton’s 50-year firefighting profession started with the U.S. Forest Service on the Cleveland Nationwide Forest. He additionally served as a fireplace captain for the Orange County Fireplace Division, Assistant Chief on the Rainbow Conservation Camp for Cal Fireplace, Division Chief for Cal Fireplace and Sycuan Fireplace Division chief.
